Guwahati: Assam will start delivering subsidised food directly to the homes of elderly residents and people with disabilities. The state government aims to clear hurdles for those unable to reach fair price shops. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the plan this week.

The service addresses mobility issues for vulnerable populations. It ensures people get food security despite physical limits. The Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs will run the program. Minister Kaushik Rai is overseeing the rollout.

Sarma spoke on the shift in policy via social media. "For elderly citizens and Divyangjans who are unable to collect their ration, we will take Anna Sewa to their doorsteps. Serving every deserving family is the essence of Jan Sewa and we remain resolute in fulfilling this commitment," he said.

Thousands stand to benefit. The scheme works under the National Food Security Act. Both urban and rural households qualify. It marks a push to fix welfare gaps. Assam now joins several states adopting this delivery model to assist residents.
