Guwahati: The Assam government has ordered road construction agencies to fast track infrastructure projects and complete urgent repairs across Barak Valley and Dima Hasao. This directive follows a high level review meeting held under the guidance of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, involving representatives from the National Highways Authority of India and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited.

Authorities have set a strict deadline of July 31 for the National Highways Authority of India to finish the essential Narimbunglo to Jatinga Junction stretch. Local government bodies, including the district administration and the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, have pledged their support to ensure this timeline is met.

The review addressed widespread public complaints regarding poor road conditions that have caused significant traffic congestion. Agencies must immediately repair damaged sections at Balachera, Rangpur, Capital Point to Rangirkhari, and Malidahar to Kalain. Addressing the situation, the government stated it remains "committed to improving road connectivity and ensuring the timely completion of infrastructure projects to boost transportation and development across Barak Valley and Dima Hasao."

During the meeting, officials also investigated reports of irregularities involving construction projects. The Cachar District Commissioner received instructions to launch an inquiry into allegations regarding the construction of so-called ghost houses within project packages. Additionally, planners discussed long term solutions for recurring waterlogging at Malua along the Silchar to Churaibari highway, mandating that the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited finish necessary drainage infrastructure.
