Guwahati: Assam’s major semiconductor manufacturing plant in Jagiroad is on track to begin production within the current financial year. Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the timeline following a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in New Delhi.

Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd is developing the facility with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore. Once operational, the plant is expected to function as one of the largest semiconductor hubs in India, utilizing advanced packaging technologies like flip-chip and Integrated System in Package. The facility aims to manufacture 48 million chips daily to support the electric vehicle, automobile, telecommunications, and consumer electronics sectors.

The project serves as a major economic driver for the Northeast, with projections indicating the creation of 15,000 direct jobs and over 11,000 indirect positions. To support this growth, the government is moving forward with the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology to train professionals in specialized manufacturing skills.

During their discussions, Vaishnaw and Sarma also reviewed state infrastructure projects. The leaders focused on expanding Assam’s railway network, including the redevelopment of more than 50 stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme and the expansion of over 1,300 kilometres of tracks to improve freight and passenger connectivity.
