Guwahati: A joint operation involving the Assam Rifles and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence led to the recovery of a massive shipment of poppy seeds in Assam's Cachar district. The authorities intercepted a truck carrying the illicit goods on the Silchar Bypass Road on the evening of June 20.

The operation resulted in the seizure of 8,764 kilograms of poppy seeds, which officials valued at approximately Rs 1.31 crore. Security teams acted on specific intelligence regarding contraband trafficking to track and stop the vehicle.

Two residents of Silchar were taken into custody during the raid. Beyond the cargo, the joint team confiscated the Tata truck used for transport along with two mobile handsets. Officials stated that the latest seizure marks a significant development in ongoing enforcement measures aimed at curbing illegal trafficking activities in the Northeast.

The investigation has now shifted to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence. All detainees and seized materials were handed over to the agency for further legal proceedings.
