Assam Resident Detained for Impersonating Transgender Person

Guwahati: A man was detained by police in Badarpur, Assam, after locals caught him posing as a member of the transgender community to solicit money. The individual, identified as Akhtar Hussain and known by the alias Pooja, was apprehended by members of the transgender community who confronted him regarding his deceptive activities.

Anjana Sarkar, a prominent advocate for the transgender community in the Barak Valley, stated that this is not an isolated incident. She reported that numerous youths have been disguising themselves as transgender people to extort funds from residents. These imposters have reportedly engaged in inappropriate conduct toward women, causing significant frustration among legitimate members of the community.

Local transgender leaders emphasize that they strive to live with dignity and respect. They fear that the actions of these imposters are damaging their social standing and creating unnecessary community friction. The group has formally urged local authorities to take decisive action against anyone caught misrepresenting their identity for unlawful gain.
