Guwahati: Assam has identified 172,673 illegal immigrants under the Assam Accord. Progress remains slow. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the Assembly on Monday that authorities have removed only 31,789 people from the state so far.

The Chief Minister provided a breakdown of the removals. This includes 470 formal deportations, 84 expulsions, and 1,572 repatriations ordered by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Most of the movement involves 29,663 people pushed back across the border. Sarma admitted, "The process of detecting illegal immigrants has led to the identification of 1.73 lakh individuals residing unlawfully in Assam."

Legal bottlenecks clog the system. Proceedings against 73,759 suspected illegal immigrants currently sit before various Foreigners Tribunals. Meanwhile, 174 declared foreigners occupy the transit camp in Goalpara.

The Assam Accord mandates that anyone entering the state on or after March 25, 1971, faces identification and removal. Officials must strip these names from electoral rolls and force them out. The government has yet to clarify the countries of origin for those already sent away.
