Guwahati: Nearly 83,000 hectares of Assam land sits under the control of four neighbors. Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora confirmed the numbers to the state assembly on July 8. The total loss covers 82,751.86 hectares across 18 districts.
Nagaland holds the bulk of the territory. It claims 59,490.21 hectares of land. Arunachal Pradesh sits on 16,144.01 hectares. Mizoram holds 3,675.78 hectares, while Meghalaya occupies 3,441.86 hectares. The disputes touch districts ranging from Tinsukia to Cachar.
The state government is pushing for a fix. They want these borders settled through talks. "The Assam government has progressed to settle these border disputes with the neighbouring states through dialogues," Bora said.
Officials have already inked deals with Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. These agreements follow direct instructions from the Union Home Ministry. The government hopes to clear up the confusion through these ongoing bilateral negotiations.
