Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Japanese Ambassador to India Ono Keiichi in New Delhi on Monday. The two sat for a traditional tea ceremony before getting down to business. They talked about bringing more Japanese money and technology into the state.

Sarma wants to lock in partnerships for semiconductor research, clean energy projects, and specialized language training for the local workforce. He told his staff they held a "productive exchange" regarding how Assam can fit into the broader India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. The state is hunting for high-tech manufacturing deals and infrastructure help.

The government in Assam is currently chasing global investors. They think Japan is the key to faster industrial growth. Leaders aim to boost human resources and technical skills to make the state a better place for foreign companies to set up shop.
