Guwahati: Assam is backing a massive chip factory. The state government approved 3,789 crore in incentives for Tata Electronics to build a semiconductor plant in Jagiroad. Federal officials added another 10,255 crore to the pot. This pushes total government support to 14,044 crore for the site.

Industries Minister Bimal Borah confirmed the figures in the state assembly on July 9. The project sits on the ruins of the defunct Hindustan Paper Corporation mill. It aims to revitalize the industrial zone. Tata plans to spend 27,000 crore on the facility. The company expects the plant to create 27,000 jobs, with 15,000 of those being direct hires.

The plant will focus on assembly and testing. The facility will churn out 48 million chips every day. It will use advanced packaging technologies, including flip chip and Integrated System in Package. Borah said the state government sanctioned the cash to "support the long-term success of the Tata Electronics facility." This effort marks a major shift for the Morigaon district, turning a ghost site into a tech powerhouse.
