Guwahati: Assam Police launched a significant crackdown on drug trafficking this week, seizing illegal narcotics valued at more than Rs 20 crore in two separate operations. In Barpeta district, authorities intercepted a truck on Thursday carrying contraband concealed within a hidden compartment.

Barpeta Police acted on specific intelligence to recover 671 grams of heroin and 22,000 YABA tablets from the vehicle. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the seizure, noting that the operation successfully stopped the drugs before they could reach their intended destination.

In a separate operation, Cachar Police discovered 60,000 YABA tablets during a routine vehicle check. Officials estimate the market value of this haul at Rs 18 crore. The combined value of both seizures reaches approximately Rs 20.44 crore.

Chief Minister Sarma praised the efforts of the police force, stating that authorities remain committed to dismantling drug networks despite the evolving tactics of traffickers. Investigators are currently working to trace the origin and destination of the confiscated narcotics as they look to identify the individuals behind these smuggling attempts.
