Guwahati: Nagaon police intercepted 18 quintals of banned Thai Magur catfish on July 5. Officers stopped a Tata DI van at Nonoi while it hauled the illegal shipment from Dhing toward Dimapur. The driver identified a man named Kamal as the owner of the fish.

Authorities destroyed the entire haul immediately. The Circle Officer of Nagaon Sadar Revenue Circle oversaw the disposal with help from Sangeeta Bora of the Fisheries Department. The fish are gone.

Questions linger about the vehicle, registered as AS-02-DC-5645. Records show this same van was caught by the Hojai Fisheries Department on June 9, 2026, for hauling the same prohibited species. Officials are now digging into how the truck remained on the road. The police and fisheries teams are preparing further legal action.

One official noted that the "seizure has raised questions as the same vehicle was reportedly intercepted" at Akashiganga just weeks ago.
