Guwahati: Tinsukia Police caught two alleged ULFA-I members at Jagun on June 26. The arrests followed a tip-off from central intelligence agencies. The duo traveled from Myanmar through Arunachal Pradesh before police intercepted their Swift car at Jagun Bazaar.
Officers identified the men as 27-year-old Humenjyoti Baruah and 30-year-old Papu Moran. Both hold the rank of self-styled second lieutenant in the banned group. Police recovered two AK-56 rifles, 172 rounds of ammunition, and two hand grenades.
They also found medicine kits, opioids, and jungle survival gear. The equipment suggests the men intended to hide in the brush. Investigators claim the pair had orders to strike Tinsukia town. The goal was simple. Spread terror among the public.
Police noted the operation prevented a major tragedy. Preliminary reports point to external influence. Officials stated, "Preliminary investigation suggests that the two cadres had been tasked by ULFA(I) to carry out an indiscriminate attack on civilians in Tinsukia town with the objective of creating terror among the public."
Detectives now have the suspects in custody for questioning. They are tracing the weapon supply chain and transit routes. A formal case is open. The investigation continues.
