Guwahati: The Assam Forest Department and Golaghat district administration have begun preparations for a new eviction operation at No. 2 Negheribil in the Merapani area. This site lies within the Doyang Reserve Forest near the Assam-Nagaland border. Special Chief Secretary M.K. Yadava visited the region on Thursday to oversee the assessment, joined by officials from the police, the Central Reserve Police Force, and local administrative bodies.

Authorities conducted drone surveillance to inspect the land and verify if any unauthorized construction occurred since the last clearance operation. Officials noted that approximately 55 hectares of forest land were reclaimed during a larger drive in August 2025, which saw 205 families removed from the protected area. Currently, 59 families reside on the site, all of whom have faced previous legal notices regarding their occupation.

The current eviction effort remains on hold as the families have filed a petition with the Gauhati High Court to challenge the government notices. Yadava confirmed that a court-mandated stay order is active, meaning the government must wait for a final judicial decision before taking further action. Until then, officials have left the remains of previously demolished structures standing in compliance with the ongoing legal process.
