Assam Plans Major Flood Defense for Eroding Sivasagar Riverbanks

Guwahati: Assam Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Bora toured flood-battered sites in Sivasagar on June 29. He visited Disangmukh and the site of the Ajan Pir Dargah to assess damage from constant riverbank erosion. The monsoon season is hitting hard. Bora arrived under orders from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to evaluate the crisis on the ground.

The minister confirmed the state will soon start a major protection project for the region. These lands grow massive amounts of paddy. Protecting this output is a priority. The project aims to stop the water from swallowing more soil and endangering local livelihoods.

Bora met with Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Mridul Yadav and Water Resources Department engineers to coordinate the work. He told officials to stay ready for whatever the weather brings. They must prioritize relief and protection for everyone living in the danger zones. "The initiative aims to safeguard the flood-prone areas, which are known for their significant paddy cultivation and contribute substantially to agricultural production," Bora said during the visit.
