Guwahati: Assam is building a compressed biogas plant to turn farm waste into fuel. North East Dairy and Foods Ltd signed a deal with the National Dairy Development Board and Suzuki R&D Centre India to start the project. The partners will convert organic waste into biogas and fertilizer.

NEDFL will run the plant and sell the products. Suzuki is footing the bill in exchange for carbon credits. The National Dairy Development Board will provide the technical expertise to keep the facility running.

The project targets cleaner transport and cheaper fuel. It also promises extra cash for local farmers. NDDB chairman Meenesh Shah said the project would help advance sustainable organic agriculture while increasing dairy farmers' incomes through a circular economy approach.

Suzuki already manages nine similar projects across India. This new site marks another step in the push for green energy between Japan and India. It aims to cut greenhouse gases and boost soil health across the state.
