Guwahati: The Assam government has sounded a high-alert warning as flash floods in Arunachal Pradesh threaten to send a dangerous surge of water into downstream districts. Heavy rains hit the Lower Subansiri district on June 24, with Yazali station recording 72.8 mm of rain in just one day. Much of that total fell during a short, intense window early in the morning.

The torrents triggered flash floods and significant debris flows, damaging houses and infrastructure in Yazali. The Panyor Lower Hydroelectric Project, previously called the Ranganadi Hydroelectric Project, took a direct hit. Operators opened a spillway gate to manage the massive influx of water. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered state agencies to remain on maximum alert as the flood wave moves toward the Brahmaputra.

Officials expect water levels and flow speeds to spike across the region over the next 48 hours. The surge will likely reach Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, and Sonitpur first before traveling toward Dhubri. Local administrations are monitoring river conditions and vulnerable embankments around the clock. Emergency crews, including the State Disaster Response Force and the National Disaster Response Force, are standing by for deployment.

Authorities have issued strict warnings for residents living in low-lying areas. People should avoid flooded zones and stay off the rivers in small vessels. According to official reports, the government is "maintaining constant coordination with all agencies concerned and district administrations and will continue to issue advisories and updates as required in the interest of public safety."
