Guwahati: Forest officials arrested Abul Sheikh, the chairman of the Jalabila Village Council Development Committee, on May 29 for his alleged role in the illegal logging of sal trees. The arrest follows reports of unauthorized timber extraction within the Mahamaya forest area in Assam's Kokrajhar district.

Sheikh, who operates under the Parbatjhora subdivision, reportedly maintains close ties to several influential figures within the Bodoland Territorial Council administration. While authorities continue to investigate the matter, they have yet to release a comprehensive statement regarding the details of the case.

The arrest has generated significant public attention across the region. Local residents are calling for a transparent investigation into the timber trade and any potential connections between the accused and wider criminal networks.
