Assam Minister Seeks Federal Support to Expand Irrigation and Agriculture

Guwahati: Assam Minister for Irrigation, Agriculture and Parliamentary Affairs Pijush Hazarika met with Union Ministers C. R. Patil and Shivraj Singh Chouhan in New Delhi on June 16. The discussions centered on securing federal support to boost the state's irrigation capacity and modernize its agricultural sector.

During his meeting with C. R. Patil, Hazarika emphasized the state's significant untapped potential. He noted that Assam possesses an irrigation capacity of nearly 27 lakh hectares, yet current infrastructure only covers about 7 lakh hectares. The ministers discussed strengthening this infrastructure to align with the central government's vision of Har Khet Ko Pani. Patil acknowledged the state's potential and promised full support for enhancing these vital facilities.

Hazarika also briefed Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on current agricultural initiatives and future growth strategies. Following the talks, the ministers reiterated a shared commitment to improving farmer welfare and agricultural productivity. A government statement highlighted the collaborative effort, noting: "The meetings underscored the commitment of both the Central and State Governments to work together to enhance irrigation facilities, boost agricultural productivity, and improve the livelihoods of lakhs of farmers across Assam."
