Guwahati: Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika strongly defended the proposed Uniform Civil Code during the state Assembly session on May 27. He argued that current legal discrepancies, specifically regarding marriage laws for different communities, hinder national equality. Hazarika specifically challenged the continuation of different marriage rules for Muslims, suggesting that all citizens should operate under a unified legal framework.
A core focus of the minister's argument was the practice of polygamy. He stated that men who marry multiple times without the consent of their existing wives should face direct legal consequences, including jail time. Hazarika maintained that laws promoting gender equality and protection should apply to everyone regardless of their community.
Addressing criticism that the legislation targets specific religious groups, Hazarika clarified that the Uniform Civil Code deals strictly with civil matters. He emphasized that the proposed bill is designed to address issues such as marriage, inheritance, property rights, and maintenance rather than interfering with religious rituals. While the state government promotes the bill as a path toward social justice, opposition parties and various organizations have expressed concerns regarding its implementation and potential exemptions.
