Guwahati: Assam Cabinet Minister Ashwini Ray Sarkar now leads the Northeast Traditional Wrestling Federation. National President Sudesh Kumar confirmed the appointment after handing over the official paperwork. The move signals a hard push to keep the region's indigenous grappling styles alive.

Sarkar steps into the role with a clear mandate. He must build up local talent, organize fresh tournaments, and secure national recognition for these martial sports. The federation expects this leadership will convince more young athletes to hit the mat.

The group remains focused on the future of regional athletics. According to the federation, the appointment is meant to "strengthen traditional wrestling across the Northeast by encouraging greater participation among youth, preserving indigenous sporting heritage, and promoting the sport at regional and national levels."

The federation looks for growth. Sarkar will drive this effort through structured competition and wider outreach across the states.
