Guwahati: A youth from Pathsala, Assam, has been detained following accusations that he posed as a Central Bureau of Investigation officer to orchestrate a widespread fraud scheme. Identified as Laxman Barua of Haripur, the man allegedly used a home-made identity card to pose as a senior investigating official and influence others.

Investigators discovered that Barua allegedly promised victims jobs in the Education Department, Assam Police, and Navodaya Vidyalayas. A search of his mobile phone revealed numerous forged appointment letters and images containing fake signatures of high-ranking officials, including the Director General of Police. Police also seized a seal belonging to the Patacharkuchi Revenue Circle Officer printed on stamp paper.

The scheme began to unravel after a family filed a complaint against Barua, citing concerns about his marital status and his intentions toward their relative. Members of local Hindu organisations subsequently detained him in Pathsala. According to reports, Barua attempted to settle the situation during his detention, as members of Bajrang Dal stated, "the accused allegedly attempted to resolve the matter by offering a cheque of Rs 5 lakh at the spot."

Beyond the impersonation charges, authorities are investigating allegations that Barua contacted an illegal arms network to purchase a pistol for Rs 80,000. Officials also noted that Barua previously operated a private institution called Srijan Academy, which has since closed. Local police are continuing their investigation into the full extent of the fraudulent activities.
