Guwahati: Authorities in Assam have arrested 24-year-old Bipul Mallik following the brutal murder of his former girlfriend, Susmita Mandal, in the Dimoria area. Khetri Police took the suspect into custody in Guwahati within 12 hours of the discovery of the victim's body on June 4.
Investigations indicate that Mallik lured the victim to a secluded field under false pretenses before attacking her with a sharp weapon. Medical reports confirmed the victim sustained 18 stab wounds, and her throat had been slit. During interrogation, Mallik claimed he suspected the victim of being involved in another relationship, telling investigators that "he suspected the victim of being involved in another relationship."
The pair shared a history involving prior legal conflict. Mallik was previously jailed in July of last year under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act after allegedly impregnating the victim when she was a minor. He had been released from prison only this past February. Investigators believe this previous case created a deep-seated grudge, which served as the primary motive for the attack.
Family members of the deceased claim Susmita was deceived into meeting her killer. Police continue to hold the suspect in custody as they process his statements and gather further evidence regarding the circumstances of the murder.
