Guwahati: The 16th Assam Legislative Assembly is set to convene for its upcoming Budget Session starting July 6 and running through July 31, 2026. The state government will formally present the budget for the 2026-27 financial year on July 10, marking a pivotal moment for the state's economic planning.

Proceedings open on July 6 with standard business, including obituary references, the introduction of official bills, and the submission of supplementary demands for grants. The government will use the Annual Financial Statement to detail its revenue projections, proposed expenditures, and core policy priorities for the year. Following the presentation, members will engage in a three-day debate from July 13 to July 15 to scrutinize these allocations and discuss developmental initiatives.

A brief recess is scheduled from July 16 to July 21, allowing Departmentally Related Standing Committees to conduct a rigorous review of departmental grant demands. The Assembly will resume on July 22 for detailed deliberations on expenditure proposals and subsequent voting. As the session progresses, the House will address the Assam Appropriation Bill, 2026, to finalize legal approval for government spending. According to the Assam Legislative Assembly Secretariat, the session is expected to serve as a critical platform for determining the state's governance framework, as officials will manage "major fiscal decisions and legislative matters scheduled for discussion" throughout the month.

The latter portion of the session shifts toward government business and private members' resolutions. These sessions will provide space for lawmakers to debate governance and public welfare issues, solidifying the economic direction for the upcoming fiscal period.
