Guwahati: Assam is betting big on its silk industry. The state government launched Mission Senehjori as part of the 2026 budget to stop throwing away Muga silk cocoons. Right now, nearly 40 per cent of these cocoons end up as useless waste.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the plan on X. The state intends to build specific infrastructure to process this waste. By turning discarded material into high-value spun yarn, the government expects to boost the local economy and spark new job opportunities.
Officials view Muga silk as a vital cultural and economic asset for Assam. The mission aims to cut down on production loss while keeping the traditional industry alive. The Chief Minister made the stakes clear: "The iconic Muga silk is Assam's pride, yet nearly 40 per cent of its cocoons go to waste. Building on Mission Senehjori, the Assam Budget 2026 invests in infrastructure that will transform silk waste into high-value spun yarn, creating jobs while strengthening Assam's Muga ecosystem."
