Assam Launches Mission Senehjori to Turn Muga Silk Waste Into Profit

Guwahati: The Assam government is taking action to save its signature industry. Under the Assam Budget 2026, officials started Mission Senehjori to process discarded silk materials. Right now, nearly 40 percent of Muga silk cocoons become waste. This massive loss happens because the state lacks proper processing facilities.

Mission Senehjori changes the math. The state will build new infrastructure to convert this waste into high-value spun yarn. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the plan on X. He noted, "The iconic Muga silk is Assam's pride, yet nearly 40 per cent of its cocoons go to waste. Building on Mission Senehjori, the Assam Budget 2026 invests in infrastructure that will transform silk waste into high-value spun yarn, creating jobs while strengthening Assam's Muga ecosystem."

This move creates jobs. It also boosts the economic potential of traditional silk producers. The government expects the project to make silk production more sustainable and reliable. By adding value to raw materials that were previously thrown away, the initiative aims to increase income for workers across the sector. It keeps the industry alive.
