Guwahati: The Assam government has launched a new free transportation initiative designed to help students from tea garden communities get to class. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced the program, which falls under Samagra Shiksha Assam, to address the travel difficulties that often keep children from attending school regularly.
More than 9,700 students in Classes I through X across 198 schools in 11 districts will benefit from the scheme. Each participating student receives transport assistance valued at Rs. 5,400 for the current academic year. The program operates from June 10, 2026, until March 31, 2027, with the exception of July 2026.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the importance of the effort, stating the program is a "vital step to ensure that no child is denied education because of difficulties in reaching school."
Local school management committees are tasked with organizing the transport services to ensure the project runs smoothly at the community level. Officials expect this initiative to improve student attendance and make daily travel safer for children living in the state's tea-growing regions.
