Guwahati: Assam has taken a significant step toward modern urban infrastructure with the opening of the first integrated waste management facility in the Northeast. Located in Lekai, Dibrugarh, the plant was inaugurated on Friday by local MLA Prasanta Phukan. The project, which cost an estimated Rs 25 crore, operates under the state's broader waste management initiative.
The facility is capable of processing more than 1,000 metric tonnes of solid waste every day. Its operational reach extends beyond Dibrugarh to include the neighboring towns of Duliajan and Chabua, while also handling industrial waste from Naharkatia. Beyond general solid waste, the site is equipped to manage biomedical materials, addressing a critical need for environmental compliance in the region.
During the ceremony, Prasanta Phukan emphasized the project's role in the city's future. "This facility marks a new chapter in Dibrugarh's journey towards becoming a model city. As Dibrugarh is being projected as Assam's second capital, it is only fitting that we set the highest standards in urban infrastructure, and waste management is a critical part of that vision," Phukan stated.
District officials, including District Commissioner Bikram Kairi and Pollution Control Board Chairman Arup Kumar Mishra, attended the event. The plant will function through close coordination between the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation and local bodies to manage the transport and collection of waste. By centralizing these services, the government aims to minimize environmental degradation and align the city with national standards for urban waste processing.
