Guwahati: Tinsukia district officials have launched emergency containment measures following the detection of African Swine Fever in Uttar Rangpuria village. District Commissioner Sumit Sattawan invoked the Disaster Management Act of 2005 to address the outbreak, officially designating the village as the epicenter.
A one-kilometer radius around the site is now classified as an infected zone, while a 10-kilometer area serves as a surveillance zone. Between May 27 and May 29, authorities are conducting culling operations to prevent the virus from spreading. These actions follow guidelines set by the National Action Plan for the control of the disease.
To stop the further movement of the virus, the administration has enforced a 30-day ban on the sale, transport, and trade of pork products throughout the Sadiya co-district. This restriction also covers the movement of pigs to and from neighboring districts and the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Officials stated that violations of these rules will result in legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
While the disease is often fatal for domestic and wild pigs with mortality rates nearing 100 percent, health officials confirmed that African Swine Fever does not affect humans. The district administration has asked pig farmers and local traders to remain calm and cooperate with veterinary teams to help manage the situation.
