Assam Honours First Chief Minister Gopinath Bordoloi on 136th Birth Anniversary

Guwahati: Assam marked the 136th birth anniversary of its first Chief Minister, Gopinath Bordoloi, on Saturday with tributes reflecting on his legacy as a foundational figure in Indian politics. Leaders and citizens across the state gathered to remember the Bharat Ratna recipient for his efforts in securing Assam's future during the partition era.

Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya honoured the statesman for his patriotism and commitment to public service. In a message marking the milestone, the Governor stated, “On the birth anniversary of this great son of Assam, I offer my heartfelt respects.” He noted that Bordoloi's foresight remains a guiding influence for the state today.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also paid his respects, identifying the former leader as the architect of modern Assam. Writing on the platform X, Sarma credited Bordoloi with using his political courage to protect the unique interests of the region while firmly maintaining its place within India.

Commemorative events took place across the state, including at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. Airport staff highlighted his lasting impact by distributing saplings to passengers, a gesture intended to honour his dedication to growth and environmental stewardship.
