Guwahati: Assam is rapidly turning electric. New vehicle data shows nearly 20 percent of all new registrations are now electric vehicles. Forest and Environment Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah confirmed the surge on July 9, highlighting three months of steady gains. The shift started at 15.7 percent in April, climbed to 19.4 percent in May, and hit 19.6 percent in June.

This jump puts the state at the front of the pack for clean energy transport. Officials point to a few simple factors behind the growth. Expanding charging stations, cheaper electricity rates, and reliable power grids are helping drivers make the switch. Proactive state policies under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also play a major role in moving the needle.

Baruah said, "The state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, remains committed to accelerating the transition to green mobility."

The push for electric cars is part of a larger plan. Assam wants to balance economic growth with environmental health. By cutting emissions and building a cleaner transport network, the state is trying to hit broader climate goals. Each new electric car on the road adds to that effort. The government intends to keep growing these incentives to ensure the trend continues upward.
