Guwahati: The Assam government has officially launched Mission 2 Lakh Govt Jobs, an ambitious initiative designed to fulfill its electoral pledge of generating 200,000 new employment opportunities within five years. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the program will target vacancies across state departments, autonomous institutions, semi-government bodies, and various missions.

To oversee the implementation, the administration established a specialized task force led by Chief Secretary Ravi Kota. This group is responsible for conducting a comprehensive review of existing and future vacancies, including retirement projections, and must submit a detailed roadmap within three months. During a May 27 review meeting, officials focused on refining recruitment processes and exploring policy incentives to improve staffing levels in remote areas.

Beyond direct government hiring, the state is integrating self-employment and entrepreneurship programs like the Chief Minister’s Atmanirbhar Asom Abhijan into its broader economic strategy. This new effort builds on the previous administration’s track record, which successfully filled over 164,000 positions through departmental processes and the Assam Direct Recruitment Examination.

State departments have been directed to perform internal assessments to provide actionable data for the five-year plan. The government aims to establish clear annual targets and rigorous monitoring mechanisms to ensure these roles are filled with transparency and efficiency.
