Guwahati: The Assam Forest Department has launched an enforcement operation in Kaliabor to stop illegal fishing activities occurring during the annual fish breeding season. This move follows a formal order from the District Magistrate prohibiting fishing in regional water bodies from April 1 to July 15.

The restrictions are designed to protect various species, such as Rohu, Pithia, Bahu, Kuri, Mali, Chital, and Khoria, allowing them to breed and replenish their populations undisturbed. Despite these rules, officials received reports that some individuals were continuing to fish in the area.

Personnel from the Silghat Forest Range Office targeted a Brahmaputra River channel at No. 2 Bhurbandha during the operation. They seized multiple nets and various types of fishing equipment being used in defiance of the ban. Department officials confirmed that they will maintain these patrols to protect local wildlife, stating that "enforcement efforts would continue to ensure compliance with the seasonal restrictions and to safeguard fish populations during the breeding period."
