Guwahati: Assam’s flood crisis triggered a dual wave of relief efforts. The Directorate of Sainik Welfare handed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma a Rs 25 lakh cheque for the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Meanwhile, the state BJP dispatched Rs 16 crore in materials to Upper Assam.
Brigadier Polash Chowdhury, accompanied by Air Marshal Anjan Kumar Gogoi and Lieutenant General Rana Pratap Kalita, presented the funds. The donation aims to bolster recovery efforts. "The donation symbolises the veterans' enduring sense of duty and solidarity with the people of Assam during the ongoing flood crisis," Chowdhury said. Many veterans are also working directly with civil authorities to aid victims.
Sarma flagged off the BJP’s massive aid shipment from Guwahati’s Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan. The stock includes 1.8 lakh mekhela chadors, 1.8 lakh children’s T-shirts, and 1.5 lakh mosquito nets. These supplies target residents in Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Golaghat. Heavy rains in Nagaland starting July 19 devastated the region, impacting 11 lakh people across 2,101 villages.
The government is now rushing to provide direct cash to families. Death compensation hits Rs 9 lakh per victim. This includes Rs 4 lakh in government ex gratia and Rs 5 lakh from the relief fund. Families missing loved ones will receive equal payments if victims remain untraced after one month. Residents in the four worst-hit districts will receive an immediate total of Rs 32,500 per household.
Sarma confirmed further support measures. He will meet with bank representatives to discuss loan relief. Orunodoi payments of Rs 2,500 hit accounts August 1. Affected students get school uniforms, free textbooks, and cash grants ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000. Lost academic records will be replaced at no cost.
