Guwahati: Assam officials rallied farmers at Champupara on Tuesday to stop dumping chemicals into fish ponds. The event gathered 100 local farmers, 75 of them women, inside the Chamaria legislative district. This push targets the Goroimari Development Block to protect water quality and public health.

District Fisheries Development Officer Dr. Sanjay Sharma warned the crowd about the risks of current practices. He said, "Excessive chemical inputs not only affect aquatic ecosystems but also pose serious health risks to consumers." He told farmers to follow scientific methods and official government guidelines instead.

Goroimari holds nearly 5,000 aquaculture farmers and leads the district in production. The state has already started training sessions on composite fish culture and handing out quality fingerlings. Key officials like Manidip Sarkia, Keyen Das, Rajkumar Malakar, Himanshu Basnach, Gautam Medhi, and Jiten Kumar Das attended the event. The Tamuldi Fishery Co-operative Society and local social worker Jaliluddin helped organize the meeting to ensure long-term growth for the industry.
