Assam Finalizes Massive Security and Logistics for Ambubachi Mela 2026

Guwahati: The Assam government has completed extensive preparations for the annual Ambubachi Mela at Guwahati’s Kamakhya Temple. Officials expect nearly 800,000 devotees to attend the four-day event, necessitating a massive coordination effort across multiple departments.

Tourism Minister Ajanta Neog announced that three large camps have been established to accommodate the influx of pilgrims. To manage the crowd, authorities have installed a public address system and prioritized sanitation throughout the temple premises. Food inspectors will monitor quality standards, and special assistance facilities have been created for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

Regarding the state’s tourism growth, Neog noted: "The state has received approximately 8.5 million domestic tourists and around 42,000 foreign tourists so far."

The Guwahati Traffic Police has implemented a comprehensive strategy to manage vehicle flow. Access to the Nilachal Hills will be restricted, with vehicular movement beyond Nursery Point prohibited except for emergency services. Food supply vehicles are restricted to night hours, and officials have designated specific parking zones while banning roadside parking. Shuttle services and ferries will operate from the Pandu route and Sonaram School Playground to reduce road congestion.

Tourism Department Commissioner and Secretary Diganta Barah confirmed that pilgrims may proceed toward the temple only between 5:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Authorities have also enforced strict conduct rules, warning that anyone found using alcohol or narcotics will face legal action. Furthermore, to honor the sanctity of the shrine, all visitors must remove their footwear before approaching the temple area.
