Guwahati: Farmers in Assam’s Kolowlowa Deori Gaon are staring at dead crops. A state-run irrigation network in the Tingkhang constituency sits broken and choked with weeds. The canals cannot move a drop of water. Decades of neglect have rendered the system useless.
Local growers claim public cash went down the drain. They say contractors took payment to hack away brush but never fixed the pumps or pipes. These accusations remain unverified as the Irrigation Department stays silent. The farmers tried to force the issue at the local department office. Tempers flared. Voices were raised.
The department hit back fast. Officials filed a formal complaint against the farmers at the Khowang Police Station following the heated meeting. The accused stand by their actions. They maintain they were only trying to secure the water needed for their harvest. "Their only demand was the supply of irrigation water for their fields," a source close to the group said.
The villagers now want the Tingkhang representative to step in. They need the taps turned on before the season ends in total failure. The local government has yet to offer a fix for the failing infrastructure.
