Guwahati: Assam is handing out land rights to 1.14 lakh tea worker families. The program covers 250 tea gardens in its second phase. Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare Minister Rameswar Teli confirmed the move during Monday’s Assembly session after a query from Congress MLA Asif Mohammad Nazar.

The government designed this scheme to grant legal ownership to workers living in labor lines on estate grounds. Officials are currently surveying the land to finalize the process. Teli told the House, "The government was implementing the scheme in phases to provide land ownership rights to tea garden workers residing in labour lines within estate premises."

This initiative follows a successful first round. Authorities previously handed out land deeds to 28,831 families across 106 different estates. Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off the program on March 13. He personally delivered the first set of documents to three families, marking a major push for worker property rights across the state.
