Guwahati: Assam swept the competition at the North East Zone Inter-State Badminton Championship. The event wrapped up September 19 at Shillong's JN Indoor Stadium. Assam secured five individual golds after already taking every team title on Thursday: men's, women's, and both U-19 divisions.
Over 270 players and officials from eight states participated. The tournament was organized by the Meghalaya State Badminton Association, backed by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs and the Badminton Association of India.
Assam started the final day strong. Gargi Saikia beat teammate Noimikha Saikhia 15-3, 15-9 in the U-19 girls' singles. Prangan Choudhury took the boys' singles title by beating Arnav Protim Borgohain 15-9, 15-10. Later, Avikaa Borgohain grabbed the women's singles gold against Mizoram's Lalrinkimi, while Himanish Das beat Orijit Chaliha for the men's singles title. T Boruah and N Choudhury finished the streak by winning the men's doubles final.
Mizoram and Manipur grabbed two individual titles each. Arunachal Pradesh took one. Arunachal's Manku Taku and Gyurmey Tseten won the U-19 boys' doubles in a tight 15-7, 10-15, 16-14 finish. Mizoram stars Lalrinhlui Hmar and Zoramthari Renthlei took the girls' doubles, and Vanlalpekhlua and Lalrinhlui won the mixed doubles. Manipur's M Hemam and P Konjengbam grabbed the senior mixed doubles, while M Kshetrimayum and SM Devi secured the women's doubles victory.
Meghalaya managed four bronze medals. Elsarica Umdor, Netania T Tariang, the duo of Tariang and Gavin Kharbuki, and the pair of Gitchiak Bregim A Sangma and Sonnal Joshi all placed. Meghalaya Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang attended the closing ceremony. She congratulated the winners and "praised the participation of young players from across the region." These matches served as key preparation for Meghalaya players ahead of the state-hosted National Games next year.
