Following a meeting with Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi, Sarma highlighted the positive impact these deals will have on small businesses and farmers in his home state, specifically pointing to potential growth for Assam's tea industry.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry reported that India has expanded its network to include nine agreements across 38 nations. Recent pacts include deals with Mauritius, the UAE, Australia, the EFTA nations, the UK, Oman, New Zealand, and the EU. These agreements have been finalized in stages starting from 2021.
Goyal also announced progress on a pending trade deal with the United States. With US Ambassador Sergio Gor noting that nearly all terms are settled, officials expect to finalize the first part of the agreement during meetings in New Delhi from June 2 to 4. Goyal remains confident that the deal will be signed shortly, serving as a foundation for a broader economic partnership between the two countries.
