Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recognized Paschimbanga Divas on Saturday, describing the occasion as a pivotal event that secured West Bengal as a part of the Indian Union during the 1947 Partition. The observance marks the anniversary of the Bengal Legislative Assembly voting to create a separate province, which ultimately ensured the region became a sanctuary for displaced Hindus.
Sarma credited the outcome to the dedicated efforts of Syama Prasad Mookerjee alongside other Hindu nationalist leaders. In a post shared on X, Sarma stated, "Best wishes to my sisters and brothers of West Bengal on Paschimbanga Divas. This day marks a defining moment in India’s history, shaped by the efforts of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee and countless other Hindu nationalists, who ensured that a part of Bengal remained within the Indian Union and became a refuge for dispossessed Hindus during Partition."
The Assam leader also criticized the previous political landscape, alleging that the significance of the date was long suppressed by the Left. He suggested that earlier administrations intentionally ignored this historical chapter to appease specific vote banks. With the new BJP government in West Bengal officially marking the day, Sarma expressed his hope for the state's future prosperity, concluding his remarks by invoking the blessings of Goddess Durga for the people of the region.
