Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the recent surge in petrol and diesel costs during a social media broadcast on Sunday. He attributed the price hikes to international geopolitical instability, noting that India relies on imports for nearly 90 percent of its crude oil requirements.
Sarma explained that disruptions in the Middle East, along with energy market volatility, have created financial strain for both citizens and the government. He expressed confidence that the central government is working to mitigate these effects. He noted, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi was making efforts to minimise the impact of rising fuel costs on consumers and shield citizens from global market fluctuations as far as possible."
Beyond the economic outlook, the Chief Minister detailed several upcoming development projects. The state will resume cash transfers under the Orunodoi scheme in early August alongside the distribution of essential commodities. Infrastructure updates include the upcoming Gohpur-Numaligarh tunnel, new four-lane road projects, and an express highway connecting Siliguri and Silchar.
Sarma also reaffirmed the government's goal to generate two lakh jobs for youth and establish medical colleges in every district. Looking ahead, he announced that Prime Minister Modi is set to visit the state from July 1 to July 3, during which time a prominent foreign dignitary is also expected to visit Assam.
