Guwahati: Vigilance and Anti-Corruption officials in Assam arrested Additional Director of Land Records Lachit Kumar Das on May 21 for allegedly accepting a bribe. The arrest took place at his office in Rupnagar, Guwahati, during a trap operation organized after a citizen complained about a corrupt demand. The complainant alleged that Das requested 1 lakh rupees to issue a no-objection certificate for a land sale.

Das was caught red-handed inside his office chamber accepting 45,000 rupees as an initial payment. Officials recovered the marked currency from him in the presence of independent witnesses. Following the arrest, a case was registered at the Anti-Corruption Branch Police Station under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

A subsequent overnight search of the officer's residence in the Beltola Tiniali area yielded significant financial assets. Investigators seized 48.38 lakh rupees in cash found inside a home locker. They also discovered fixed deposit certificates worth 80 lakh rupees held in the names of Das and his family members.

The search team gathered additional evidence including various insurance policies, bank account details, and documents related to land ownership. Authorities are now analyzing these financial records as part of the ongoing investigation into the officer's activities.
