Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called for communal harmony ahead of the upcoming festival of Eid al-Adha. Speaking in the state assembly on May 26, he urged citizens to refrain from cow sacrifice, stating that no religious scripture mandates the practice. Sarma praised the decision of several Bengali Muslim organizations to move away from cow sacrifice as a respectful gesture toward the Hindu community, noting that such actions foster peaceful coexistence across the state.
During the session, the chief minister also highlighted the government's broader legislative and economic agenda. He discussed the introduction of a Uniform Civil Code Bill, which he said aims to provide social security to minority communities. Regarding the economy, he reported that the state GDP has grown to 8.71 lakh crore rupees over the last five years and expressed confidence that poverty rates will drop significantly in the near future. He also announced plans to create two lakh government jobs and support 10 lakh young entrepreneurs to boost self-employment.
Sarma reaffirmed his administration's commitment to security and development. He emphasized that a primary goal for the next five years is to make Assam free of illegal immigrants. Reasserting a firm stance against infiltration, he pledged to take strict measures to identify and deport foreigners residing illegally in the state.
