Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is shelving politics. He plans to keep his administration focused strictly on development for the next two years. The move comes after his party secured a mandate of 102 seats. Sarma does not expect a return to regular political skirmishes until roughly 2028.

"Election results have given us 102 seats. Our task now is to work for the people. For the first two years, development work will be our focus. From around 2028, perhaps, we can get back to politics," Sarma told reporters on July 5.

The state Assembly prepares for its budget session starting Monday. Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah will present the official budget on July 10. The plan covers five years of economic goals. It aims to fulfill promises made during the last election cycle.

Key sectors include agriculture, industry, and renewable energy. The government will also push MSMEs and self-help groups to drive job growth. Sarma brushed off concerns regarding opposition efforts to unite. He claims his party holds a firm grip on the state. He insists the BJP cannot be shaken in Assam for at least 25 years.
