Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has set an ambitious target for the state, instructing education officials to ensure key performance indicators surpass national averages. During a high level meeting with education and finance representatives, Sarma emphasized that the state must excel in metrics like dropout rates, teacher student ratios, and gross enrolment ratios.
The administration is focusing on three core pillars: improving teaching quality, eliminating regional disparities, and expanding access to schooling. Sarma outlined his broader vision for the region, stating, "My instructions to officials have been clear, to ensure key indicators such as dropout ratio, teacher-student ratio, geographical parity, gross enrolment ratio, among others, exceed the national average."
Beyond performance statistics, the Chief Minister ordered the standardization of basic school infrastructure. This initiative includes ensuring every campus has consistent access to electricity, clean drinking water, functional toilets, and usable classrooms. The meeting also covered the status of various student support schemes, including the distribution of textbooks, bicycles, and scooters, alongside existing free admission programs.
Sarma further scrutinized the progress of Government Model Colleges and Tea Garden Model Schools while reviewing ongoing teacher recruitment drives. Officials received directives to prioritize the conversion of high schools into higher secondary institutions and to develop strategies to curb dropout rates in higher education. The government remains focused on the timely execution of these projects to modernize the education sector throughout Assam.
