Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with officials at Lok Sewa Bhawan on June 8 to drive forward the state's use of the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund. The meeting focused on long-term strategies to improve post-harvest management and community farming assets.
Sarma instructed the Agriculture Department to hold a large-scale stakeholder workshop between August and September. This event will aim to coordinate efforts to improve local infrastructure and increase income for farmers across the state.
A significant portion of the discussion centered on securing Geographical Indication tags for indigenous agricultural produce. Sarma noted that obtaining these tags will promote the uniqueness of local goods and improve their value in the marketplace. He directed his department to begin the formal process for these recognitions immediately.
The Chief Minister also emphasized the need for widespread organic certification. He highlighted the growing demand for sustainable, chemical-free practices in both domestic and international trade. According to an official statement, the objective is to prioritize "the growing importance of sustainable and chemical-free farming practices" to ensure the state remains competitive.
