Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has unveiled a broad economic vision for the state, pledging to increase daily wages for tea garden workers to Rs 450 over the next five years. During the third day of the state Assembly session on May 26, Sarma noted that while the government has already raised wages to nearly Rs 300, further progress relies on strengthening the tea industry to better compete in global markets.

Beyond the tea sector, the Chief Minister reaffirmed his administration's commitment to creating two lakh government jobs for the youth. He emphasized that the state must foster a generation of entrepreneurs capable of creating employment for others, rather than relying solely on public sector recruitment. Sarma highlighted the importance of modernizing agriculture and cottage industries to build a self-reliant economy.

Sarma also stressed the growing economic influence of women in Assam. He praised the success of self-help groups in empowering women to contribute to their family prosperity beyond household duties. He urged the Assembly to scale up support for these groups, viewing them as a vital component of the state's future economic transformation and rural development.
