Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma demanded total support for the state anti-drug campaign on Tuesday. He warned lawmakers that bashing police for aggressive tactics ruins agency morale. Politicians must back the badge.
Sarma addressed the state Assembly during the ongoing budget session. He noted that while representatives claim to fight narcotics, they frequently attack police in the chamber following major arrests. The Chief Minister pushed for a consistent stance.
"All members in the House have today pledged cooperation in the fight against drugs. But when police take tough action against the criminals, questions are raised in this very Assembly on the police."
The Chief Minister highlighted the brutal reality of the job. Officers frequently face danger while dismantling complex supply chains. Traffickers move product through Mizoram and Manipur before reaching the international border with Myanmar. The Union Government is now working with local states to lock down these routes.
Enforcement remains only half the battle. Sarma stated that the government must expand rehabilitation programs to help young addicts quit. A mix of street-level force and social support stays the best path forward.
