Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state Council of Ministers will expand on June 5. The move ends weeks of speculation regarding new appointments to the BJP-led NDA government.
Sarma confirmed the date in a social media post, noting the expansion follows the completion of the latest Assembly session. This decision comes shortly after the NDA secured a victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, which led to Sarma starting his second consecutive term as chief minister.
The current ministry, which took the oath of office on May 12, remains limited in size. Several key departments are currently handled directly by the chief minister, a situation that prompted calls for a broader cabinet reshuffle. While the names of the new inductees remain undisclosed, observers anticipate a blend of veteran politicians and fresh faces from the BJP and its alliance partners.
Sarma previously suggested the cabinet could eventually reach between 18 and 19 ministers. Final decisions regarding the structure depend on ongoing consultations with party leadership. This expansion aims to finalize the cabinet as the administration pivots to its five-year development and governance agenda.
