Guwahati: Assam officials confirmed they have started building Zubeen Khetra, a memorial site dedicated to the late musician Zubeen Garg. The project sits on over 10 bighas of land in Sonapur. Construction crews are already at work. They have finished nearly 30 per cent of the permanent boundary wall. The state allocated over 3 crore rupees during the 2025-26 budget to fund these early efforts.

Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Bora told the Legislative Assembly that a special committee now oversees the site development. This group includes Garima Garg, Anuradha Sharma Pujari, and several other prominent figures. They met in March 2026 to lock in their infrastructure plans. The government holds a firm commitment to this project. Bora stated, "The government remains committed to preserving and promoting his artistic legacy."

State officials are also weighing a broader proposal to plant modern cultural centres in every Assembly constituency. These hubs would host auditoriums and offer free classes in music, theatre, and dance. Financing remains the primary hurdle for this expansion. For now, the state focuses on existing outreach. The Cultural Affairs Department continues to run workshops and festivals to keep local traditions alive across all districts.
